Zein is a classic alcohol soluble protein. As seen in the above figure, acetone, but not methanol, precipitates it from phenol. Interestingly the mixture of 50% acetone, 50% THF doesn't precipitate zein other than a small amount of an apparent aggregate (arising from peroxides?). Zein was extracted from aqueous solution by the PBCV virion protocol except that LiCl was omitted except for the lane labeled LiCl.
