Higher levels of ammonium sulfate suppress extraction of the reddish brown smear above CMV RNA1. Note the smaller RNAs extracted by intermediate ammonium sulfate concentrations. These are not sharp like standard dsRNAs. They are likely small plant RNAs. In any case one can vary composition of extracts by adjusting salt concentration. Where dsRNA extraction is unsatisfactory for a given virus-host combination, varying extraction conditions may help.
