Effect of salt on protein phenol extraction


The leftmost sample in each set of 4 shows poor protein extraction in the absence of salt.
Lanes 2-4 in each set of 4 show that salt alone (either added directly or produced by neutralization) facilitates extraction
Precipitates in the acid extractions were larger than those of neutralized (NEM) samples
Acidic phenol is extracting additional components (acids) which cause smearing in LiCl alone lanes.
Note that only acid extracts TMV cp efficiently. Presumably heat would denature TMV and improve protein yield.
